Yes, we understand. Costa Rica, in its infinite wisdom, only allows a 90-day stay for foreign flagged vessels. This is a rule passed about 2 years ago. It really makes it hard on cruisers seeking a safe haven during the 6-month hurricane season. Costa Rica used to be perfect until the rule change. Tango is in Costa Rica under a special permit, which cost a couple thousand dollars for an attorney to obtain. Good luck with your decision! Debra and Richard

We cannot spend a winter in Malta because we are Americans. Malta is a signatory to the Schengen Treaty. Would have been nice; but the Europeans do not want Americans hanging around the entire combined EU for longer than 90 days. Ridiculous situation for American sailors in the Med....and for Australians and New Zealanders and basically any citizen of any non-EU country. Bureaucracy rears its ugly head again.

Have you considered Malta? It has been years since we wintered there when we were on our prior yacht STRIDER. But as European winters go, it's mild. Malta is a very interesting place, historically and culturely. We enjoyed it greatly. On the other hand, Istanbul is currently on our radar for visiting soon - in the summer, of course!! Good luck. Thanks very much to Kjeld. The dehumidifier sounds like a great idea. Since we will always have shore power during cold weather it won't be a problem powering it. We will buy one on the next trip to the south side of Cyprus. Wishing you pleasant voyage to the Canaries in June.

Hi Judy and Bill. Warm air can contain more moisture than cold air. When warm air is cooled down,(touching metal-frames or windows), it reach the dewpoint and water is condensing on the surfaces. The moisture in the boat is from 1)crew (2 gallons of moisture/day), 2)bathroom, 3)cooking 4)wet clothes. This is a problem to be solved quickly, or you will get problems with fungus, rotting wood and microscopic insects. Fist thing do do, is to sleep with some ventilation to the bedroom.Next you should ventilate the boat throughly twice a day. Then you need to bring down the humidity in the air. The cheap solution is to buy calcium chloride in the marine shop. The bag of CC shall be placed over a bucket, where you collect the condensated water. For you I will recommend buying an Air Dehumidifier. Prices start somewhere around $200.
I envy you Texans who never experience ice, fog and fungus on your boat.
If you find fungus in the boat or on the sails, you can use a 10% solution of 5-15% Benzalkonium Chloride and 5%<nonionic tensides. This is sold under different names as "Fungus Remover".

Hi Judy,
Your problem is a though one. While we were cruising down in Pantagonia, South America, we battled the condensation too. If you can tape pastic, shrink wrap, or your kitchen plastic wrap to the underside of the hatches and over the ports, it will help. Also, leaving the hatch a tiny bit open will sometimes eliminate the condensation. When both are not practical, wrapping dish towels around the metal frame to absorb the moisture overnight I found useful. Hope you'll get an early spring! ;-) best wishes, Marlene on Diesel Duck

Eating Swedish meatballs at an Ikea in Cyprus! lol! I loved that. Sometimes you just have to marvel at situations in time.

My husband and I were once (2005) in a 5th floor apartment in Kabul, Afghanistan, sharing a meal with an Afghan family in the dark, save for a propane light, because there was no juice in Kabul that night. Nonetheless, there were, at one point, three people on cell phones! They could have been talking to anyone in the world, yet no power in Kabul. lol! We just thought it was noteworthy. Good sailing.....

Love reading y'all's blogs. Especially the cruising costs. Gotta say, when I saw the flags showing "Bebe", I immediately thought of my 91.5 year old father, who hates a yacht club shirt I wear. Don't you just hate it when someone points something out to you, and then you then feel like you have to repeat it? Oh well. See, it seems that it has flags representing the club's initials, and the second initial is the same as the first. He insists that the second flag should be "repeat first flag". Therefore, yours should be "B", "E", "Repeat first flag" and "Repeat second flag". Sorry. Bill

We recently had a reunion with high school friends. Unfortunately it was because one of the group passed away unexpectedly. However, it was still great to be with old friends, so glad to hear that Bill got to do the same.
